Acne Treatments

What is Acne?

Acne is a common chronic or semi-chronic skin condition affecting an estimated 85% of people aged 12 to 25.

While the majority of acne breakouts in the younger population are hormonal and semi-permanent, acne may leave significant permanent scars that would require more costly and severe treatments to heal and may never be completely treated.

Unfortunately, a substantial percentage of young acne sufferers will continue to have symptoms or occasional acne breakouts throughout adulthood. Furthermore, there are a number of patients who develop acne at a later stage of their life leading to both visible skin damage and psychological side effects.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is caused by lipids, debris, and dead skin cells clogging the pores. Excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous gland can also cause acne. Sebum is a naturally occurring lipid that coats, moisturizes and protects the skin and hair. Hyperkeratinization and dead skin cell build up can also aggravate acne by clogging the pore through which sebum is normally excreted, creating the ideal environment for bacterial growth. When germs enter this greasy mixture of dead skin, the pore gets blocked, irritated and inflamed, and permanent scars develop.

Acne Skincare Products

To alleviate acne we suggest that our patients begin treatment with medical-grade skincare. The reason we believe it is essential for every patient to be on the correct medical grade cosmetics is because in a lot of the cases this intervention alone is sufficient to improve symptoms and maintain the results.

The primary goal of successful acne treatment is not only to improve and reduce the acne as quickly as possible, but also to achieve long-term results and skin health. Many of the treatments available on the market, such as antibiotics, may provide a temporary cure, but once the medication is discontinued the acne will flare up again and in many circumstances, become more severe.

At BLU Clinics London we only choose brands that are extensively tested up to the highest medical standards. One of the below brands will be recommended by our Doctors according to your skin type and condition.
